A lecture organised as part of the ‘Mercredis de l’Espace des sciences’ series, featuring Marie-Yvane Daire, archaeologist and CNRS research director at the CReAAH (Centre for Research in Archaeology, Archaeosciences and History). The coast of Brittany boasts a rich heritage comprising thousands of archaeological sites spanning all periods, from early prehistory to the present day. Whilst some remains are well-preserved, particularly on the islands and islets, a great many sites are at risk of disappearing in the relatively short term. Coastlines are, in fact, subject to the effects of climate change, notably erosion and runoff, extreme weather events, not to mention the consequences of increasing human activity along the coast. Faced with this dual challenge of heritage and scientific loss, archaeologists now find themselves in a situation of urgency to study these archaeological sites before they disappear entirely. Given the impossibility of physically protecting these remains, solutions based on the principle of ‘preservation through study’ and on citizen science are being implemented.
