At the nanometre scale, matter reveals astonishing properties that can be harnessed for healthcare. Among the nanomaterials being studied, iron oxide nanoparticles hold a special place: their magnetic properties open up promising prospects for medical imaging and certain therapeutic applications. But how can nanoparticles suitable for medical use be produced? How can their size, shape, composition and surface be controlled to achieve the desired properties? How can they be made to be effective, biocompatible and capable of targeting diseased tissue?
Sylvie Bégin-Colin will take us into the realm of the infinitely small to explore the challenges of their design, at the crossroads of chemistry, physics, biology and medicine. She will demonstrate how a single nanoplatform can combine diagnosis, treatment and imaging-based monitoring, paving the way for more targeted and personalised medicine.
