Guirec Soudée, the adventurous sailor

For our thirty-first interview, we take you to meet adventurous yachtsman Guirec Soudée. And yes, you may not be aware of it, but Guirec is a native of the region, owning a family home on a island off the coast of Plougrescant on the Côte sauvage.

Parole de Breizh, invites you to discover the Côte de Granit Rose through encounters with those who live Brittany, transform it and cultivate it. These ambassadors are craftsmen, artists, producers… but above all, inhabitants of the Trégor. They love the Côte de Granit Rose and explain why growing the essentials is so important!

A look back at the family history

The Soudée family has been established in Brittany for generations. His paternal grandparents bought this small 3-hectare farm in 1945. In the old days, they lived here in self-sufficiency, but today the house, built of stone and wisteria, looks as good as new. From the far north of the property, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of Plougrescant, the islets, the tors and the sea as far as the eye can see! It’s breathtaking! When Guirec arrived here with his father, he was a Tom Sawyer-style adventurer: barefoot all winter long, he set off alone on his first boat at the age of 7. As the youngest of eight siblings, he enjoyed a happy childhood in the Trégor.

Here you live with the winds and what is impressive is the weather; You need to be a seasoned sailor to navigate off our coasts.

The adventure begins!

At the age of 18, he took off for Australia, working at a series of odd jobs for two years before returning in 2012 to prepare for his very first circumnavigation. He bought a 10-metre steel sailboat, spent his first night at sea on board and cast off for a five-year voyage. It was during this adventure that he began to make a name for himself, accompanied by his beloved red hen Monique, his faithful companion until their return in 2018. He then set off again for a double Atlantic crossing by rowing boat, in 2020 and 2021, before taking on a new challenge: the Vendée Globe 2024. This new adventure led him to settle in Concarneau, not without a certain amount of nostalgia. He returns regularly to the Côte de Granit Rose, and in particular to Plougrescant.

What happens next?

His next challenge: the acquisition of a 20m ultimate to circumnavigate the globe from Brest by the end of 2025! The last person to achieve this feat was Jean Luc Van den Heede in 2004, who still holds the record in just over 122 days. It’s enough to motivate our navigator!

A free-spirited adventurer

For Guirec, the term “adventurer” is far from being a fancy word: he likes to work on his projects alone with his team, but without being a brand name. His attachment to the wilderness of Brittany remains intact, even though he has travelled to the 4 corners of the world, and as his friend Yann Arthus Bertrand, who comes to visit us from time to time, says that this is &the most beautiful corner of the world& No, the Breton isn’t chauvinistic! Between 2 competitions he enjoys all kinds of water sports: paddling, surfing, swimming … His dog, who is accompanying us during this exchange, is also part of the party and doesn’t miss a swim with his master! And for a bit of a thrill, he also admits to going to Lannion for a little parachute jump. In short, Guirec is at ease with everything.

If you éted a colour? blue
If you éted a season?
All seasons!

Cultivating the essential

What does the phrase « Cultiver l’essentiel » inspire in you? For Guirec Soudée « cultiver l’essentiel » c’est être heureux et profiter pleinement de chaque instant! Plougrescant holds a special place in his heart, as it is where he grew up. He returns there whenever he can to recharge his batteries. But he also likes to wander around Paimpol, attracted by the lively atmosphere of its large port, its lively quays and its small, specialised shops. One of his favourite places to visit is La Roche Jaune, which is still in use, in the commune of Plouguiel, still on the wild peninsula. This site offers a breathtaking view of the Jaudy estuary, in a peaceful and grandiose atmosphere.
