Hêtre de Kervinihy

  • Remarkable tree
Kervinihy, 22420 Le Vieux-Marché
Its sinuous branches and imposing dimensions (25 m high with a span of 20 m) make it an astonishing beech. The tree trunk, scarred by lovers, adds a certain romanticism. The depth and importance of the dendroglyphs, with their evocative texts and motifs such as initials or hearts engraved all over the bark of its trunk, bear witness to sentimental confessions, some of which go back a long way.
Also noteworthy is its impressive root system, which follows an ancient embankment.

Several legends are associated with the tree. Situated on a high, initially treeless spot, it is said to have served as a watering hole for fishermen from Locquémeau, some fifteen kilometres away. This would have enabled them to find their way back to the harbour safely.
More likely, it served as a landmark in the Trégorroise countryside, as it is located on one of the heights of Le Vieux Marché at 135 m. The surrounding site was once a church property and a place of refuge for those fleeing seigneurial justice. It is estimated to be between 150 and 350 years old.
Parking des sept saints: start of the 4.5km treasure hunt, access to the 14km hiking trail and Mon Tro Breizh.
