Born into a very modest family, Ernest Renan was a brilliant scholarship student who was destined to become a priest, even though he left the seminary in 1845.

He was known as one of the “giants” of the 19th century, sharing with Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas the largest print-runs, at times reactionary and revolutionary, provocative and visionary, at times priest of “Reason” and philosopher of the uncertain. His works examined the Gospels in the light of demanding scientific criticism, scandalising the clergy and the royalist Catholic right. A scholar respected throughout Europe, Renan was showered with honours: he was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, a professor at the Collège de France, an Academician and an Officer of the Légion d’honneur.
