Although the Jaudy was once an invasion route, it is now a migration route for fish (notably salmon, trout and sea lampreys) and the estuary is renowned for its ecological wealth. The estuary is recognised for its ecological richness, and is classified as an important bird migration area thanks to the presence of the European otter. The salt meadows and mudflats are home to a wide variety of birdlife: waders, ducks, gulls and seagulls benefit from the abundant food and the proximity of the breeding colonies between the Seven Islands and the Archipelago of Bréhat. The winged star of the Jaudy estuary is undoubtedly the tadorne de Belon, an original duck. It nests in burrows borrowed from certain mammals, earning it the nickname of ‘land goose’. Its highly contrasting plumage makes it instantly recognisable. It is present in the estuary for most of the year, between January and September.
